Each year, the UN’s International Day of Happiness takes place on the 20th March. This day provides us all with a great opportunity to think about what it is that makes us feel positive and take some time out to boost our moods.
In the UK, it might feel like happiness has been in short supply this year, with many of us pining for our friends and families, plus missing out on some of the things – from meals out to week-long holidays in the sun – that used to bring us joy.
Sadly, new Beyond the Box research reveals just 16% of Brits describe themselves as ‘very happy’, so it’s clear many of us have got some room for improvement.
So, try these top tips to get your endorphins flowing – you never know, they might be just the thing to put a smile on your face!
Go Green to beat the Blues
We all know the positive impact environmentally friendly behaviour has on the planet; but did you know being eco-friendly can also positively impact your mood? In fact, almost 1/3 of Brits feel happier when partaking in ‘green’ activities such as taking the recycling out (56%), turning lights off which aren’t in use (55%), using a reusable bag when shopping (54%) and flattening old cardboard boxes (50%).
Beyond the Box research also found that those that do something positive for the environment three times a day are twice as happy as those who go green less than three times a week.
The good news is, it’s easy to make being eco-friendly a bigger part of your daily routine so ‘Get Inspired’ now with some of our favourite sustainable ideas, tips and tricks.
Bag a Bargain Online
If you think it feels like Christmas when you receive a cardboard package in the post, you’re not alone. More than 1/3 Brits admit the mere sight of a cardboard package on the doorstep sparks joy.
So, why not treat yourself and bag a bargain online. Whether it’s a book to keep entertained or a restaurant meal kit, many of the goodies sent out across the UK are protected in sustainable packaging materials such as cardboard.
Just remember to flatten and recycle old cardboard boxes once they’re finished with. Did you know that cardboard packaging is 100% recyclable and the paper fibres used to create the boxes can be used again and again? Now, that’s certainly something to smile about!
It’s Cool to be Kind
Doing something nice for a friend, family member or neighbour is a sure-fire way to get you feeling all fuzzy inside. And sometimes it’s the simple gestures that can have the most impact.
Our research reveals that over the past year, taking the time to enjoy a warming cup of tea became one of the top five little pleasures to put a smile on our faces.
So, whether it’s cheering up a loved one with a morning cuppa in bed or sharing a socially distanced doorstep brew with a neighbour, don’t underestimate the importance of the little things when it comes to giving yourself a boost.
Check out these top tips from tea expert, Neil Philips, to make the perfect brew that will leave a loved one feeling all warm inside.
